Dear Vintage Bike Riders,
The Danube Bend, as a natural region, is one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, not to mention the sky-scraping peaks of the Pilis and Visegrádi Mountains with their innumerable sights and breath-taking sceneries. The area is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and bike riders. Anyone who has ever set their foot there will not be disappointed with what they see.
If you simply have a look at your map, you can notice things that you have normally overlooked up to now. This is what happened to me too. I ride my bike between Budapest and Esztergom many times, covering shorter or longer distances at a time, but I have never ‘looked further away’. Why do I say that? If you look at the map more carefully, passing through certain villages and towns along main road No. 11 and 10 an interesting route appears to the rider’s eyes. I guess everyone easily recognizes the shape :-)
...
This shape inspired my idea to create the Danube Bend’s Heart Performance Bike Tour (DBH PBT), which is none other than a 100 km performance bike tour for vintage bicycles (and their fit riders).
Useful hints about the performance tour
Where is the route?
The bike tour will cover a distance of approximately 100 km, touching towns and villages marked on the map.

Who can participate?
Anyone who feels that their physical condition allows them to cover the distance by bike.
What bikes can enter the tour?
Any bikes manufactured before 1988 with a chain shifter, hub shifter or a rear wheel that can be turned for ‘shifting’, or any vintage bikes are highly welcome whether or not they were manufactured in Hungary or elsewhere.
Date of the tour
The date of the performance tour (PT) is 6 September 2014. We could as well say that it is going to be a ‘farewell to summer’ on two wheels.
Time needed to cover the distance
There is no time limit on the PBT. As so-called ‘racing’ and traditional bikes will participate as well, it would be difficult to say exactly how much time is needed. Nevertheless, I believe that it should fit into one day including resting periods.
Where will we rest?
The distance is long so we are going to stop and rest every 25 km or so.
1st rest point: Leányfalu, swimming pool
2nd rest point: Visegrád
3rd rest point: Piliscsaba
Good to know! The check-points and stamping points will fall between the designated rest points of the tour. Therefore, we will have two more opportunities to catch our breath and recover.
Will there truly be check points?
Yes. In order to certify completion (full coverage) of the distance, riders will need to have their check sheets stamped at three locations.
(Points A-D) veterankerekpar.hu [Budakalász, Omszki-tó]
(Point B) ‘Balázs’ bike shop [Tahi, 26 Szentendrei road]
(Point C) Féja Géza community centre [Esztergom-Kertváros, 50 Damjanich road]
Is there an entry fee?
No, but every participant will still receive a gift start number. The back of the start number will need to be stamped :-)
Some important things worth knowing
Almost the entire distance of the tour will go along main roads. Therefore, all participants must observe the rules of the effective Highway Code! The organizer entity does not take responsibility for material damages or personal injuries whatsoever resulting from neglecting the Highway Code.
Due to the long distance of the tour, it is only practical to set off on a technically decent bike which would not let its rider down at half the distance.
Every participant is responsible for their own touring equipment, including spare parts, tyre tubes, tools, pump, clothes suited to the weather of the day and, of course, food and drink.
We want the tour to be even more exciting so make sure you come stylish and dress to your vintage bike.
If you like the idea, join us on 6 September at Lake Omszki in Budakalász and bring your vintage bicycle along for a fantastic day’s ride in beautiful Hungary! Let us have a great vintage ride together!
Let your VINTAGE BIKE TOUR dream come true! :-))
